Miller Pope was born in South Carolina but spent most of his career
during the “golden age of illustration” in the New York advertising and publishing arenas, after getting his start on the Marine Corps’ legendary Leatherneck magazine.

Miller studied figure drawing at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., at the Art Students League in New York City.

His works have appeared on novel covers and in major magazines. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators in 1957.

With his wife, Helen, he moved south in the 1970s and worked to develop The Winds Resort and Sea Trail Plantation on the Southeastern North Carolina coast.

In 2004 he lost his beloved wife, Helen, after 51 years of happy marriage. He has two grown children, one, a son, lives nearby and the other, his daughter lives in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Miller’s two grandsons live in Wilmington, NC. and his two grand daughters both live in Charleston, SC.

Today Miller’s children run the resort leaving him free to do creative work. Other than writing or painting, he loves to dine with friends, watch movies, read history and walk on the beach.

Miller lives quietly in a small house with one of the best views on the east coast. He loves the Brunswick Islands so much that he has about given up traveling. Among his many local friends are some of the country’s best artists and writers.

Wish I could go back and experience your fascinating life and travels! I am currently reading Madman, and both of us enjoyed your Pirates of the Silver Coast. I also remember that you did illustrations in Seventeen magazine. We own a house in Holden Beach where we spend our free time, and we will eventually retire here. Yes, we also love the runswick Islands. What a well kept secret they are!

    Sincerely,

    Ann Maier
